Hydrological equipment

Hydrology field work needs more than flow measurement. Ground water levels, water quality at depth and the silt a river carries all need their own instruments. This category brings together the instruments Lakshmi Engineering Works makes for that work.

Ground water level

A ground water level sounder measures the depth to water in a well or borehole. A marked cable is lowered until its electrode touches the water, and a lamp or buzzer signals the moment, so the depth can be read straight from the cable.

Water and sediment sampling

• Niskin and Van Dorn samplers close at a chosen depth, so the sample comes from that depth only. They are used for water quality surveys in lakes and reservoirs.
• The Punjab type silt sampler collects a one litre sample of river water with its suspended sediment, for silt load studies in rivers and canals.

Flow in small channels

A V-notch weir measures low flows accurately in small channels and irrigation lines: the height of water over the notch gives the flow rate.
