Niskin-type sampler that collects a water sample from a chosen depth in rivers, lakes and reservoirs without mixing.
Overview
A Niskin water sampler collects a water sample from a chosen depth without mixing it with the water above. The sampler goes down open, so water flows straight through it, and both ends close at the depth you want.
It is used for water quality surveys, limnology and reservoir studies, where a sample has to come from one known depth.
How it works
Both ends of the barrel are held open, so water flows through as the sampler goes down on its line.
At the chosen depth the closing mechanism is tripped and both ends seal.
The sampler comes back to the surface with the water from that depth held inside.
