Suspended sediment sampler with a one litre metal bottle in a frame, opened and closed by a spring and lever at the chosen depth.
Overview
Soil conservation, irrigation, navigation and flood control projects all have to deal with the silt that rivers carry. The Punjab type silt sampler is the most common suspended sediment sampler for measuring it: it collects river or canal water together with its suspended silt from a chosen depth.
A metallic one litre bottle is held vertically in a metallic frame at the lower end of a pipe of suitable length. The mouth of the bottle is closed by a rubber cork, which a flexible wire with a spring and lever opens and closes from above during sampling.
Its advantages are low cost and a simple design that any field team can operate. It is supplied in a wooden carrying case.
