Small cup rotor current meter for measuring low velocities in shallow streams, canals and channels, used on a wading rod.
Overview
A pygmy current meter is a small cup rotor meter for shallow water and low velocities, where a full-size meter does not fit or turns too slowly to read well. It is normally held on a wading rod while the operator stands in the channel.
It suits small streams, irrigation channels, field channels and measuring flumes, and is read with a counter or water velocity indicator and its calibration chart.
How it works
Set the meter at the measuring depth on its wading rod.
The small cup rotor turns with the water, and each revolution is signalled to the counter.
Revolutions over time, with the calibration chart, give the velocity.
