River cableway with a double drum winch that moves a current meter across and down the river from the bank, manual or electric.
Overview
A cableway lets you measure current velocities in rivers and canals from the bank, where there is no suitable bridge or the river is too wide, deep or fast to wade. A cable is fixed across the river, and the current meter with its sinker weight travels along it.
A double drum winch on the bank moves the meter horizontally across the river and vertically to each measuring depth. Two counters show its position, so every measuring point can be found again. A digital counter or water velocity indicator connected to the meter gives the velocity directly.
Depending on the river and the highest velocities expected, sinker weights of 25, 50, 100 kg and more are used. The stationary installation is solid enough for safe operation in extreme conditions, such as floods and long spans. Manual and electric versions are made to suit the site.
Key features
How it works
The winch moves the meter along the cable to each vertical, read on the horizontal counter.
The second drum lowers the meter to each measuring depth, read on the depth counter.
The velocity indicator reads the meter at each point for the discharge calculation.
