Tipping bucket rain sensor with 0.2 mm resolution and reed switch output, for data loggers, event loggers and weather stations.
Overview
The tipping bucket rain gauge is the standard electrical rain sensor. Rain from the collector fills one side of a small, balanced bucket. When it holds 0.2 mm of rain the bucket tips, empties and brings the other side under the funnel, and a magnet passing a reed switch gives one pulse for every tip.
Logged with their time, the pulses give both the rainfall total and its intensity. Resolution is 0.2 mm, with accuracy better than ±5% at 25 mm per hour and 27 °C, and the gauge works from -4 to +50 °C. Because the bucket empties itself, its capacity is unlimited.
The sensor works with our automatic rain gauge, the automatic weather station and the low-cost rainfall event logger, which runs for about a year on a button cell and stores 8,000 rain events.
Key features
How it works
Rain falls into the collector and runs into one side of the tipping bucket.
Each 0.2 mm of rain tips the bucket, which empties and brings the other side under the funnel.
A magnet passes the reed switch at each tip, and the logger records the pulse with its time.
