Mechanical wind vane to IS 5799:1970 with compass arms, showing the direction the wind blows from at the point of observation.
Overview
The wind vane shows the direction of the wind at the point of observation. Wind direction is the compass point from which the wind is coming, such as south, south-west or west, so the vane turns to face into the wind against fixed compass arms.
Observers record the direction each day and plot it on a special graph called a wind rose, which shows the prevailing winds at the site. The vane is made to IS 5799:1970 for meteorological observatories, and is also used in environmental monitoring and wind resource assessment.
Its compact, robust design needs virtually no maintenance.
