Evaporation pan to IS 5973:1970 in galvanised steel on a wooden base, with pointer gauge and calibrated refill jug.
Overview
The open pan evaporimeter measures how much water evaporates into the atmosphere at a site. It is used at meteorological stations and in irrigation, where it tracks how fast soil moisture is used between irrigations, and in reservoir and water balance studies.
The pan is made to IS 5973:1970 from corrosion-resistant galvanised iron, painted, and stands on a wooden base. A pointer gauge in the pan and a calibrated refill jug give correct evaporation readings, and a wire mesh cover keeps birds and animals out. The pan is also made in copper instead of galvanised iron.
Key features
How it works
The pan is filled with water up to the tip of the pointer gauge.
Over the day, water evaporates and the level falls below the pointer.
The calibrated jug refills the pan to the pointer, and the water added gives the evaporation.
