Two steel rings with driving plate, hammer and floats for finding the rate at which water enters the soil.
Overview
The double ring infiltrometer is a simple instrument for finding the infiltration rate of water into soil: the amount of water per surface area and time that penetrates the soil. The rate can be calculated from the measurements and Darcy's law.
The two rings are driven into the ground and partly filled with water. The outer ring acts as a barrier, so measurement takes place in the inner ring, where water runs almost vertically. This prevents divergent flow in layered soils, and several measurements can run at once for a reliable mean result.
The standard set has two steel rings of different diameters, a driving plate, a hammer, floats, a stainless steel hammering cross and a stop watch.
Key features
How it works
Drive both rings into the ground with the driving plate and hammer.
Partly fill both rings. The outer ring keeps the flow from the inner ring vertical.
Time the fall of the water in the inner ring to get the infiltration rate.
